Turkeys live in the wild in the southern United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. They are found in open woodland areas, moving over the ground in small flocks and roosting in the trees. They eat mainly insects, seeds, and berries.

The wild birds reach about 4 feet long (120 cm) and are metallic green, bronze and copper in color, the head and neck being blue and red. Domestic turkeys are descended from the common turkey. They were first tamed by the Aztecs, long before they were brought to Europe in the 1500's.
