There are 37 species of this beautiful, amazing bird. They have very colorful bills and reach up to approximately 2 feet (60 cm) in length. Their plumage is also brightly colored, and a shiny black is worked into the color pattern on their body feathers.

Toucans live in the forests of Central and South America, ranging from Mexico to Argentina. The feed mainly on fruit, the long bill being used for reaching out to pluck the fruit and berries from trees. The food is held in the tip of the bill, and then passed into the mouth with a flick of the head. Toucans may also eat insects, termites, spiders, lizards, and young birds.

Toucans nest in holes, raising their young in tree holes high above the ground. They live in small flocks of about a dozen birds. The colors of the bill may vary from one individual bird to another, and could function as an attraction in courtship displays.
