TARSIER

Phylum:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Chordata
Mammalia
Primates
Tarsiidae

Tarsiers are wholly carnivorous, eating grubs, insects, frogs, and small birds. These tiny animals weigh between 3 and 4 oz. (85 and 110 g). They have thick, woolly fur and a long, almost naked tail. Being nocturnal animals, they have large eyes and mobile ears. Able to turn their heads almost 360 degrees, they are always on the alert to escape such predators as owls. Their long hind limbs enable them to make great leaps among the branches of their tree homes. There are three species. Horsefield's tarsier lives in Borneo, Sumatra, and two smaller islands that lie between. It is dark reddish-brown in color and up to 6 in. (15 cm) long, with a tail almost twice that length. The Philippine tarsier is the same size but grayish in color. The Celebes tarsier is about 5 in. (13 cm) long with a dark grayish coat.
