Tamarins are primitive monkeys that are included in the same family as the
marmosets, with 20 species. They are usually 6 to 10 in. (15 to 25 cm)
long, with a tail of 10 to 16 in. (25 to 40 cm). They live at all levels in
the trees of South American forests, and are very agile. Most species seem
to live in pairs with their young. They make high-pitched calls, some of
them eluding the human ear. The coats vary greatly in color from species to
species, and also within species. They eat leaves, fruit, buds, and
insects.
