SPIDER MONKEY

Phylum:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Chordata
Mammalia
Primates
Cebidae

Spider monkeys are thin primates found in Central and South America. They
have amazing tails which can wrap around and cling to branches. They live
in troops high up in trees and limit their diet to fruit. There are two
species, both very rare. The common spider monkey has coarse, wiry hair.
The color varies: one race is black and buff, another is black, while a
third is black with a red face. The head and body length is 16 to 24 in.
(40 to 60 cm), with a tail of 24 to 36 in. (60 to 90 cm). The woolly spider
monkey occurs only in the forests of southeastern Brazil. It is yellowish
or grayish-brown and its woolly hair is thicker than that of the common
species. Being about the same length as its relative, it is a bit heavier.
