SKINK

Phylum:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Chordata
Reptilia
Squamata
Scincidae

As one of the largest lizard families, there are approximately 600 different species of skink. Many are smooth-scaled with small limbs, while others have no limbs at all. Such features help the skink to burrow in the sand. Some species, such as the Greek legless lizard, spend most of their lives underground.

Other species have well-developed legs and live above ground. The giant skink has a prehensile tail, which contains amazing strength for climbing. This is the largest skink of the species, and grows up to 2 feet in length (60 cm).

Most skinks eat insects, although a few species are vegetarian. Skinks reside in most continents outside of Antarctica, and are active mainly by day.
