SERVAL

Phylum:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Species:
Chordata
Mammalia
Carnivora
Felidae
Felis serval
Leprailurus serval

These linky cats are found in most of Africa, south of the Sahara. Servals have large erect ears, are beautifully marked with stripes and spots, have fairly short tails, and have long legs. They stand up to 20 inches in height (50 cm) and can reach up to 1 yard in length
(1 m).

They prefer open country forest fringe, and spend their day curled up in a nest of grass. Their long legs enable them to run fast over short distances. They travel through high grass with long, high leaps, can climb quickly, and can swim quite well.

As night hunters, the serval's diet consists of rodents and birds. Mole rats are common prey and it is thought that the serval's large ears help it to hear rodents burrowing in the ground. Like many cats certain of their prey, the serval sneaks up with its slink-run, and can kill with one sharp blow of its outstretched forepaw.

When the females give birth, they deliver 2 to 3 kittens per litter.

A tail helps a cat balance. As the cat launches itself into the air, it flicks its tail straight up, then holds it stiffly until it lands safely on the ground.
