PUFFIN

Phylum:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Chordata
Aves
Charadriiformes
Alcidae

Puffins are small auks. They are about 12 inches (30 cm) in length, and their bills are massive, triangular in shape, and colored with red, yellow, and blue stripes. In the corners of their mouths, they have a thick yellow skin. The bills give these seabirds a comic appearance. The plumage is black above and white underneath, with the black extending around the neck as a collar, and their legs are bright orange.

The Atlantic puffin breeds from Greenland to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the west, and from Spitzbergen to northern France in the east. Some are spread as far south as the Mediterranean.

Puffins swim underwater using their wings while searching for food, and are able to hold as many as 30 small fish in their beak.

The spectacled bear looks as if it wears glasses. It obtained its name because the dark fur around its eyes looks like eyeglasses, which people used to call spectacles.
