The agile proghorn is probably the fastest mammal of North America and can reach speeds of up to 50 mph (80 km/h) over a short distance. It stands about 40 inches at the shoulder (100 cm), and is reddish-brown with white underfur. The animal has white cheeks and rump, and has two white bands on the throat. It has a short, dark mane and long curving horns. The pronghorn depends on its keen eyesight to detect is natural enemy, the coyote.

Pronghorns are extremely curious creatures, and will investigate any moving object, a habit once exploited by hunters. Millions of pronghorns once roamed the land, but hunting has drastically reduced their numbers. Today, they are a protected species.
