The maned wolf is a South American fox and one of the largest members of the dog family. It stands approximately 30 inches (76 cm) at the shoulder. Their bodies are long with slim legs and weighs about 50 lbs. (23 kg). The coat is reddish-brown in color, and has a mane of long hair on the back of its neck and shoulders. The mane rises when the animal is excited.

The maned wolf has no natural enemies, but is hunted by man in Brazil and Argentina, where it lives in small areas of forest mixed with open country. This animal is a solitary, nocturnal creature that preys on small rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects. It also eats fruit, sugar cane, and other plant food.
