Lynx are bobtailed members of the cat family, which include the caracal and the bobcat. The European lynx, which lives in northern Europe and Asia, can exceed 4 feet in length (1.2 m), including its short tail and they can weigh up to 40 lbs. (18 kg.) Lynx have short bodies, tufted ears, cheek ruffs, strong limbs and broad feet. Their fur is usually sandy-gray or rusty red color with white underfur, and black spots in summer.

The Canadian lynx of norther North America is larger, with longer hair and often lacks spots. The Spanish lynx of southern Europe is smaller and more heavily spotted.

Lynx live in forests, especially of pine. They hunt by night using their acute sight and smell. Tireless walkers, they follow scent trails for hours and can climb and lie in ambush for prey on branches. Lynx hunt hares, rabbits, birds and even small deer. They also catch fish.

A litter of 2 to 5 young are produced in the spring. The kittens stay with their mother for approximately 9 months.

Cats don't really have nine lives, but are just very good at surviving a fall by twisting their body appropriately to land on their feet.
