Megaptera novaeangliae

One of the whalebone, or baleen whales, the humpback grows to around 50 feet (15 m) in length. It is found in all oceans and is remarkable for its extremely long flippers, which can be up to on-third of its body length.

Humpbacks migrate every summer to polar seas, to feed on krill, and then returning to tropical waters in winter to breed. When in warmer waters, humpbacks feed very little, building up sufficient blubber reserves in summer to last the rest of the year.

During migration, they usually keep close to the coasts, which unfortunately, makes them easy prey for whalers.

Of all the bats, only the vampire bat drinks blood. It lives in parts of Central and South America and feeds at night on the blood of sleeping horses and cattle.
