GIANT TORTOISE

Phylum:
Class:
Order:
Family:
Chordata
Reptilia
Chelonia
Testudinidae

Giant tortoises are found on the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean and on the Aldabra Islands in the Indian Ocean. They reach lengths of up to 5 feet (1.5 m), and can weigh over 550 lbs. (250 kg). It is thought that the ancestors of the tortoises arrived on the islands by floating across from the mainland on tree trunks or other driftwood.

With little competition on the islands, the tortoises were able to grow to their unusually large size. Giant tortoises are vegetarians. Some of which have long necks that allow them to easily reach the branches of shrubs and trees. Both the Aldabra tortoises and the Galapagos species are long-lived, reaching ages well in excess of 100 years.

Polar bears have a thick layer of fat under their skin to keep their body heat inside as they hunt for food in the icy Arctic Ocean. A polar bear can get so hot lying in the sun that it will jump into the sea just to cool off.
