FRILLED LIZARD

Agamidae
Chlamydosaurus kingii

The frilled lizard lives mainly in dry sandy parts of northern Australia. It grows to about 1 yard long (1 m), and possesses the strange feature of a large frill around its throat. This frill is made of skin, supported by rods of cartilage. During normal activity, the frill lies folded over the shoulders. Yet, when excited, the muscles pulling on the rods can raise and stretch the frill to approximately 8 inches or more across (20 cm). If danger threatens this lizard, it will run away on its hind legs, its fore legs held close against its body. However, if this creature is cornered, it will spread its frill, opening its mouth wide, hissing and stepping toward its enemy, to challenge. Even ferocious hunting dogs, used to attack large lizards are frightened by this display.

Apes and monkeys are more closely related to humans than any other animal. You can see this in their faces and hands. They often chatter among each other and play games.
