The ferret has been a beloved pet for many animal lovers. Also known as a polecat, the ferret is a relative of the weasel. Its long narrow body is about 20 inches in length (50 cm), and weighs up to 3 lbs. (1.4 kg). Their long fur is coarse and dark brown in color, with dense yellowish underfur showing through, and their faces have white patches with brown lining.

Polecats are common in Asia and Europe. They prefer woods but can adapt to a wide variety of habitats and make their dens in any suitable hole. In the wild, an unpleasant smelling sent is used to mark their territories. They feed on rabbits, small rodents, birds, lizards, snakes, and poultry.

Many ferrets make good house pets due to their semi-tame nature. They have cat-like qualities, and tend to be selective or fickle as to whom they develop relationships with. As pets, they tend to be a bit messy, so daily care is necessary.
