A relative of the raccoon, the cacomistle is a slender animal. It reaches up to 30 inches in length (76 cm), of which 17 inches (43 cm) consists of a bushy tail ringed in black and white. This animal weighs only about 2.5 lbs (1 kg). The coat is grayis h in color, and darker along the back, with white underfur. It is found in the southern and western parts of the U.S. and Mexico.

The cacomistle is a shy, nocturnal animal that sleeps by day in a den amidst rocks, and rises at night to feed on small rodents, birds, lizards, and insects. It is an agile tree-climber.
