The bat-eared (or big-eared) fox has a thin, narrow face, long ears, and a yellowish coat. It strongly resembles a jackal. They are close in size to that of the red fox, 18 to 23 inches in length. However, they weigh less - 6.6 to 10 lbs. (3 to 4.5 kg), approximately half.

Bat-eared foxes are found in open sandy ground in most parts of Africa, where their main enemies are man and leopards. They are nocturnal animals, but their strong curiosity can bring them out into daylight (usually in pairs).

Their diet consists of termites and other insects which they crush with their pointed teeth. They will also eat small rodents, carrion, nestlings and eggs. Their young are born in litters of two to five which usually occurs in the rainy season.

Foxes often make their way across fields or along overgrown railroad tracks at night, to feed on the food that people throw into their trash cans.
